UNDERSTANDING THE STOCK MARKET (PART 2)
The stock market maintains market and sector indicators that measure the performance of the stocks listed on the market. The Ghana stock exchange maintains two official indicators for measuring the performance of the stock market. The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) measures the performance of all shares listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange while the GSE Financial Services Index (GSE-FSI) measures the performance of stocks from the financial sector including banking and insurance companies stocks.
The primary functions of the stock market includes the following;
• Fair dealing in shares trading and other securities transactions.
• Efficient pricing of listed stocks
• Maintain liquidity for securities
• Enhanced regulations to protect investors.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is the regulatory body responsible for regulating stock market activities in Ghana. SEC regulates Ghana Stock Exchange and participants who transact business on the Ghana Stock Exchange.… (To be continued)
