Under auspices of World Economic Forum (WEF), the Davos meeting is on the theme “Stakeholders for Cohesive and Sustainable World”. It is a three-day forum.
Prof Klaus Schwab, a German engineer founded the World Economic Forum and has since been holding the forum for the past 50 years.WEF is a non-governmental organisation founded with a mission to commit to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
Top on the agenda for many of those gathering at the venue is the increasing threat of global warming, world trade, inequality between poor nations and the rich countries and the use of technology, especially benefits and threats of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
President Akufo-Addo who is attending the meeting at the invitation of the founder and Executive Chairman of World Economic Forum, Prof Schwab would be meeting leaders of other nations, woe business leaders to partner Ghana’s business communities to open industries in the country and make a strong case for fair investments in Africa among others.
President Akufo-Addo’s delegation is an indication of the target of his government at the forum; investments. This is because the entourage included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Shirley Ofori Atta; the Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta and the Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Mr Yoofi Grant and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency.
Speech
President of the United States of America, the first President to mount the prestigious platform to give the maiden speech addressed the American back home with touching on the achievements of his administration.
He also elaborated on the trajectory of the US-China trade war which had been reduced to a deal was signed between the two superpowers at the White House in Washing few days ago.
He announced that the USA would join the project by the WEF for the planting of one trillion trees in the world, called for better management of the trees and the forests and urged people to be an optimist about the future.
He described global warmings activists and scientists as alarmist and doom Sayers and claimed that the US is currently one of the largest producers of oil.
Climate Change
World global environment activist, Greta Thunberg, the 17-year-old, took to the stage and accused world leaders doing basically doing nothing to reduce carbon emissions despite evidence of a looming climate catastrophe.
Speaking before President Trump took to the stage, Ms Thunberg Pretty much nothing has been done since the global emissions of CO2 has nor reduced.
“We demand that at this year’s forum, participants from all companies, banks, institutions, and governments immediate halt fossil fuel exploration and extraction, immediately and completely divest from fossil fuel”, she added.
Global activists reached Davos by hiking trails and train after authorities banned foot traffic on a road leading to Davos from the neighboring village of Klosters. They started their three-day march from Sunday, some protesters wore koala bear costumes to call for attention to Australia bush fires whose destructive intensity has been linked by scientists to warming planet.
