Management and staff of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) on Wednesday, held a durbar to climax the celebration of the Company’s 10 years in existence. GRIDCo commenced operations on August, 1, 2008, after it was ceded off the Volta River Authority (VRA) as part of the Power Sector Reforms to develop and promote competition in Ghana’s wholesale power market.
The anniversary was on the theme: “Power Transmission –Ten Years On"
Mr Jonathan Amoako-Baah, Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, in a welcome address, indicated that since its inception, the number of Independent Power Producers (IPP) at various stages of operations in Ghana had risen to eight.
Mr Amoako-Baah added that his outfit had brought about efficiency in power delivery as well as the sustainability of supply of electricity to meet the growing demand through the provision of transparent, non-discriminatory and open-access for all participants in the power market.
Touching on the achievements of GRIDCo over the decade, he mentioned that “from that day in August 2008, we have increased the number of substations from 43 to 60”.Adding that the length of transmission lines also increased from 4,000 circuit kilometres to over 5,100, noting that its work area locations also moved from five to seven to effectively respond to faults.
Mr Kabral Blay-Amihere, Board Chairman of GRIDCo, delivering the anniversary speech, said with a mission to serve as the backbone of power delivery in Ghana, the company successfully eliminated obsolescence within the National Interconnect Transmission System.
Mr Blay-Amihere further indicated that having expanded its transmission infrastructure and adding high voltage 330 kV transmission lines, Ghana currently had a robust, reliable and secured interconnected system.
“We can report as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary that we have enhanced the existing transmission interconnection between Ghana and our neighbours; Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Benin, which we inherited from the Volta River Authority,” he said, adding that Ghana currently had a new 330 kV interconnection with Burkina Faso.
Mr Boakye Agyarko, Minister of Energy, in a speech read on his behalf by Mr William Amuna, his advisor and a former CEO of GRIDCo, urged the staff to ensure the success of the company.
Mr Agyarko asked them to make sacrifices for GRIDCo and support management to achieve its initiatives and projects as doing so would secure their welfare. He announced that the Private Sector Participation (PSP) in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would take off in February 2019 adding that a committee had been set up to ensure that all the 45 conditions in the concession agreement were met by the end of January 2019.
Awards were presented to Mr Israel Agbobli, Mr Alfred Sarpey and Mr Richard Appiah for emerging first, second and third respectively, in a safety quiz organized as part of the anniversary.
