The National Investment Bank (NIB) on Thursday presented a cheque of GH¢50,000.00 to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to support its 22nd Awards slated for Wednesday, December 20.
The Awards ceremony on the theme “Safe Mining and Environmental Protection: The Role of the Media,” would be held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra.
Mr Charles Wordey, the Head of Corporate Affairs of NIB, said the donation was in fulfilment of a request made by the GJA.
He said the amount would support the Best Business Reporter and the Best Report on Small and Micro Enterprises categories of the awards.
Touching on the theme, Mr Wordey noted it was timely especially when it was only the media that could use communication to cause positive attitudinal change among the citizenry to save the environment.
Admitting the challenges in the media profession, the Head of Corporate Affairs of NIB, urged media personnel to rise above the challenges, work to save the country through accurate reportage for the citizenry to have confidence in them.
Mr Affail Monney, the President of GJA, thanked NIB and said their support was not ordinary but it was a reflection of the importance NIB attached to the inky fraternity and their work.
He said the awards sought to acknowledge and motivate journalists to climb a higher pedestal in their career.
According to the GJA President, although there were many people who looked at the flaws of the media “and paint all of us with the same accusing brush, on the other side there are good journalists who are excelling and impacting positively in all dimensions of national life”.
Mr Monney emphasized that this year’s awards would be different, since it had been an eventful year in which the media had championed the fight against illegal mining.
He announced there would be a Press Conference on Monday, December 18 to announce the winners.
