The Akim Asafo Senior High School has received help from the MTN Ghana Foundation to resolve the problem of large class sizes, classes under trees and the use of makeshift structures.
This follows the Foundation’s commissioning of a GH¢289,000 project for the school.
This includes a three-unit classroom block, a store, classroom furniture, white boards, an office and a staff common room. A statement issued in Accra by Mrs Cynthia Lumor, the Corporate Services Executive, MTN, said the project was expected to benefit more than 1,470 students of Akim Asafo and its surrounding communities.
Mr Robert Kuzoe, the Sustainability and Social Impact Senior Manager at MTN, said MTN Ghana Foundation agreed to support the school because it recognised the important role education played in the development of individuals, society and the nation at large.
“It is important that as a nation, we create an environment that will help the youth develop their physical and mental abilities, with businesses having a role to play,” he explained. He said, “This project is a demonstration of MTN Foundation’s continued interest in providing improved access to education.”
Mr Isaac Osew Larbi, the Headmaster of the School, expressed gratitude to management of MTN Foundation for their support. He said the new classroom block would go a long way to help improve the academic performance of the students and the school as a whole. Education is one of three focus areas of the MTN Ghana Foundation so since its establishment in 2007, the organisation has invested in 75 educational projects across the country.
Some of these projects are an eight-unit dormitory block for Apam SHS, a Boys’ Dormitory Block for the Akropong School for the Blind, a six-unit classroom block for Kodjonya Millennium School, an eight-unit dormitory block for the Owerriman SHS. Others are a three-unit classroom block for Akatsi, 108- seater Library at Tsito Senior High School; and the provision of more than 1000 scholarships for needy but brilliant students across the country.
As part of MTN’s 20th Anniversary celebrations in 2016, the Foundation pledged to provide 300 scholarships of three years with an investment of GH¢5,900,000.
