Newmont Akyem Project, located in the Birim North District, in conformity with globally accepted best practice, has begun comprehensive education programme to aid its employees and business partners to have better understanding of their rights.
This activity is a requirement, signatories to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR) - an international convention, have to fulfil. Mr. Yaw Okyere Ntrama, the acting General Mines Manager, said the goal was to assist everybody to become more familiar with the “key framework on security and human rights”.
That, he indicated, would inspire all stakeholders to show mutual respect for each other’s customs, culture and laws. The mining company would continue to put the safety and the human rights of the workers at the centre of its operations, he added. Mr. Emmanuel Ato Aubenn, Regional Social Responsibility Manager, Newmont Africa, said the programme would be extended to the people in the host mining communities.
Newmont obtained the mining lease for the Akyem operation in year 2010 and commenced commercial production three years later – 2013.
